Rich Little

Reviewed August, 2005 by Nancy Hruska

“George Burns” started off the show at The Orleans Showroom recently, cracking a joke about the well-known impressionist Rich Little. “When I die, they’ll have to bury Rich instead.” A native Canadian, Rich Little has been getting under the skin of and “becoming” celebrities and political figures alike for the last 40 years. Some of his impersonated victims include heavy weight celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone, Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzeneger, and Clint Eastwood. But a lot of his voice and mannerism material comes from Baby Boomer friendly figures such as Dr. Ruth, the infamous Frank Sinatra, and even Kermit the Frog to name only a few of his 200 voice collection. Oh, and every U.S. President since Kennedy were certainly not spared by the “Master of Mimic.”

Rich jumped right into song, “One’s a crowd” which is the name of his show at The Orleans. The audience quickly learns why he opted for this title as Rich takes them through the times with a dynamic crowd including: Neil Diamond, Anthony Newly, Tom Jones, and Willy Nelson (Willy cleverly pegged with the tune “On The Booze Again.”).

Andy Rooney showed up later in the showroom complete with shaking finger, critical smirk, and shrewd voice- “If a vacuum cleaner sucked, would that be a good thing? Did you ever think about that?” Rich not only sounded like him, he became him and the audience was immediately brought back to an outlandish (perhaps annoying) episode of 60 Minutes.

Paul Lynd of Hollywood Squares and Alan Ladd (Rich’s childhood hero) are a few of which Rich spares no humility for during his show. However, what gets the crowd really roaring, is the infamous late-night Hollywood figure no demographic can deny knowing …Johnny Carson. How did Rich master Johnny’s mannerisms? “At the zoo …the Ostrich” (Carson’s famous Carnac The Magnificent bit). Rich continued on with a high bent knee walk and stretched neck Johnny, complete with backward envelope jokes for his bit.

Those in the audience familiar with Rich Little were more than likely waiting for a specific political number …The Presidents. Rich remarks, “All the big jokes are in Washington, but I brought them here tonight.” Reagan, Carter, Nixon, Clinton, and both Bush’s were shown no mercy for their side splitting character beating. None, however, were as rough as Rich’s supposed preparation to get into George W. Bush’s character. “Hold on,” he tells the audience. “I have to empty my mind.”

Frank Sinatra, a person which took Rich 7 years to master, started off the finale song. He was quickly interrupted by Dean Martin (both sober and drunk), Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, and other legends all singing in their renowned pitch and style. Rich Little voice capacity is as large as his collection of impersonations. From sex therapists to musicians to political figures to Hollywood stars, Rich does not discriminate regarding whose character to master. Anyone is liable to join Rich’s notorious “Crowd.”

David Brenner

Reviewed Feb. 11, 2004
by Ted Newkirk

Our not-so-young-anymore readers will remember David Brenner as the innovative comedian who made a record 158 guest appearances on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. Our “just turned 21″ readers are probably going “someone hosted the Tonight Show before Jay Leno?”

David Brenner was an innovator in observational comedy (“I read in the news the other day …”) and hasn’t lost his touch. His show should be required viewing for up-and-coming comedians.

Brenner has settled in for a year-long stint at the new Westin Casuarina, taking time off from the road to be with his family (a la Celine Dion) but it hasn’t slowed his work ethic. He combs the newspapers, cable news, reality shows, and just about everything else in news and pop culture assuring that his show has punch, is up-to-date, and doesn’t let up.

I won’t give away the jokes, and I couldn’t because you never see the same show twice. But I will tell you that I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time, literally being brought to tears twice!

This is a chance to see a famous legend still in his prime, and well worth the (very) short trip down Flamingo Road to the Westin Casuarina. (The Westin is closer to Bellagio than The Rio and Palms are, although in the opposite direction from The Strip).

Brenner is not a dirty comic but occasionally uses adult language to punctuate a point. I’d probably suggest 16 and over to view the show. The only people who should avoid it are those clueless about current events. If you don’t live in a cave somewhere, you’ll probably enjoy Brenner.

Hypnolarious

Reviewed April 22, 2003 by Ted Newkirk

Hypnotist shows conjure up all kinds of ideas, especially to those who have never attended one. Am I going to be put under a crazy trance? Are people going to take their clothes off? Is this some kind of mystic seance? Put those crazy notions aside and get ready to laugh and laugh and laugh when you go see Hypnolarious starring Terry Stokes. Yes, Stokes is a premier hypnotist but more importantly he is a funny guy. He’s a true entertainer. You’ll leave having enjoyed yourself.Like other hypnotist shows, volunteers are chosen from the audience. Before being hypnotized, Stokes tells them that after the show they will find their clothes neatly folded by the side of the stage after the show (just a joke, this show is PG-13 but no one gets naked). After being hypnotized ,where they are told they will be very relaxed and remember everything that happens, Stokes began to give them various suggestions that elicited hilarious responses. I don’t want to take away the fun, but you might see someone sing like their favorite music star, become amorous (or ticked off) at the person next to them, and more. You will also see his sidekick Deogee, the Chihuahua “Hypno Pup”. The laughs rarely stopped!

Since hypnotists rely on audience participation, they have to work with a new crowd every night and make the show entertaining. I saw this show twice, with two distinctly different audiences. While all shows follow somewhat of a basic format, a surprising amount of Stoke’s show was “off the cuff.” He has a marvelous ability for comedy improv and would probably be a success in any style of entertainment.

Terry Stokes has played all over the world and has a tremendous track record. However, he is new to Las Vegas and paying his dues at the small Bourbon St. Hotel, just 1/2 block off The Strip on Flamingo (you can see the Bourbon St. Hotel sign from Bellagio). The hotel isn’t much to write about, but the show is worth the short 1/2 block trek. Go check out Hypnolarious!

Larry G. Jones – Man of 1002 Voices

Reviewed August 22, 2002 by Ted Newkirk

larry g jones man of 1000 1002 voicesLarry G. Jones is a comedic impressionist who may someday be heir to the Danny Gans / Andre-Philippe Gagnon throne. He buzzes through impressions so full of one-liners and comedic lyrics that you barely stop laughing at the last one before he hit you with another zinger. He can do over 1000 voices, and does a significant variety of favorites from all eras in his show.

Jones does Julio and Willie, Chubby Checker, Johnny Cash, our last Six US Presidents reciting the Star Bang Banner followed by a God Bless America tribute to American Veterans and heroes, an unmerciful stab at Mr. Rogers, a deep Lou Rawls, Cher, a hilarious Michael Jackson, a Wayne Newton that is possibly better than the present Wayne (who’s voice isn’t what it used to be after an illness a few years back), and far more than I could list here.

Man of 1002 Voices is the perfect show to fit into your busy Las Vegas itinerary, packing plenty of entertainment and variety into an hour and the price is right: One drink minimum. Larry G. Jones – Man of 1002 Voices pays Thursday – Monday upstairs in the Events Center on the second floor of Fitzgerald’s Hotel Casino downtown Las Vegas. More information on Larry G. Jerry Lewis Show Tickets and Reviews

Jerry Lewis Show Tickets and Reviews

Jerry Lewis has retired from performing in Las Vegas. Enjoy our archived review.

Jerry Lewis

Reviewed September 13, 2000
by Ted Newkirk

Rarely do you get a chance to see a living legend — someone who both transformed comedy and has ties to old Las Vegas. And as someone in my mid-30′s, my only knowledge of Jerry Lewis has been the telethons and his goofy comedy movies from long before I was born. As noted here a few weeks ago, Jerry Lewis recently inked a 20 year deal with The Orleans hotel, and relatively new off-strip property located about 10 minutes from the Strip on Tropicana. Since he is going to be a regular headliner (3-4 times a year), I decided it would be great chance to find out what he is all about. Boy, am I glad I did!

Jerry Lewis took the stage to a standing ovation, and you could tell that he was in his element. He was essentially his own opening act, spending the first 20 minutes or so telling some (by his own admittance) corny jokes and then singing a couple of numbers. Not unlike what you might see on the telethon.

After an instrumental by his 21 piece orchestra, he came back and really kicked it into high gear. There was no specific theme, but more of a nonstop intertwining of entertainment. He’d do some of the impressions he made famous over the years, live bits from his films, and sing songs.

If you want to know who Jim Carrey borrowed his act from, go see Jerry Lewis. This man’s physical humor wasn’t a creation for the silver screen, and he still was just about as quick and agile as ever, including brushing himself off from a nasty (unplanned) fall and going on like a trooper. He pulled off everything from catching a spinning, tossed cigarette in his mouth to his funny faces and antics, all the time doing banter, jokes, and commentary in his many unique voices.

Those who long for old Las Vegas, or just wonder what it would have been like would enjoy the time he spends reminiscing about Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, which included personal thoughts and stories as well as a few short video clips. As a tribute to Frank, he sang Sinatra’s infamous arrangement of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”

Jerry is 74 years old, was very ill last year with spinal meningitis, was only one week removed from the grueling MDA telethon, and on his fourth of four nights. And yet, he did an energetic 2 hours 15 minutes virtually nonstop, roughly twice the length that most Las Vegas shows now run. And, you could see his joy of performing and love toward the audience shining through.

Go see Jerry Lewis. If you are a little older, and you enjoy some of the classic songs from that era and remember his films, go see Jerry Lewis. If you want to see how a single performer can command a stage and an audience in a way few do today, go see Jerry Lewis. If you wonder what is was like back in the Rat Pack days when Las Vegas was a little more swinging, and the performers truly looked like they were having a great time onstage, go see Jerry Lewis.
