What do you get when you put together: a virtual who’s who of pop divas throughout the decades, 6 male back-up dancers and a jaw-dropping collection of Diva-esque couture, all presided over by Joan Rivers? – Can we talk?!

Frank Marino’s “Divas” stirs these ingredients together with a little twist. The spot-on impersonators with all the right looks and moves, wearing to-die-for costumes are all female impersonators extraordinaire! Specially created background tracks weave in live recordings from legends such as Madonna, Lady GaGa, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion and Diana Ross, just to name a few, making for a near seamless juxtaposition between the “Divas” show performers and their real-life counterparts.

Audience members oftentimes appear to forget the gender-bending aspect of the show, as they become so caught up in these highly polished performances by their favorite female vocal legends. Keeping the proceedings light and fluid, Joan Rivers (AKA Frank Marino) provides snappy, sometimes risqué comedic monologues, and also manages the incredible feat of executing a new costume change between every show stopping number – each Bob Mackie gown more wise-crack worthy and over-the-top than the next.

The self-proclaimed Queen of the Las Vegas Strip, Marino has spent over 25 years as a headliner in Las Vegas, many of those as star of “An Evening at La Cage”. He is also an accomplished author, newscaster, columnist, spokesperson and, as he refers to himself, America’s favorite male actress. His first book, “His Majesty, the Queen,” was an immediate bestseller. Audiences may also recognize him from the film “Miss Congeniality 2,” co-starring alongside Sandra Bullock, his award-winning guest starring role in the hit Off-Broadway play “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, or his appearance on the E! network’s “Fashion Police”.

Marino’s other Sin City accolades include: 2 stars bearing his name in the sidewalk on the Las Vegas Walk of Fame, a Key to the City and his own namesake street, Frank Marino Drive. With his experience and reputation preceding him, Marino knows how to make sure his presentation of “Divas” delivers nightly by channeling true Diva star power, magnetism and energy, all via the unique vehicle of female impersonators. The show strives to present a true homage to music’s most unforgettable legends, as opposed to a campy drag-fest (well, okay…there is one campy, albeit hilarious, set piece).

The show ends with a performance of the La Cage classic, “What makes a man a man?” – a question that “Divas” may not necessarily answer completely, but certainly leaves audiences with much to consider.

If I hear one more crusty old-timer in Vegas ramble on about how much better this town was “when the Mob ran Vegas,” I’m going to puke. What exactly is so idyllic about a bunch of murderous thugs running a city? But, love it or hate it, the history of Vegas is inextricably linked with the history of the Mafia…and in finest opportunistic Vegas fashion, the city has figured a way to capitalize on this rampant nostalgia.

Two ways, in fact – in another of Vegas’s finest traditions (excess), there are “rival” mob-themed attractions. The Mob Museum, located downtown in the old Federal courthouse building, is a real, big-city style Museum (with a capital M)…whereas the Tropicana Hotel, down on the Strip, makes no such pretensions with its Mob Attraction, featuring more of a Disney-style tourist attraction.

As a long-time Vegas resident and history buff, I very eagerly attended both sites, beginning with the Mob Museum, downtown in the actual building where the Kefauver anti-racketeering hearings were held back in the ‘50s.

I was very impressed with the presentation and setup of this place – the building itself lends an air of authenticity, and it is designed as a real museum-museum – not like the fake tourist trap “museums” that dot the Strip. There is actual history on display here, in a series of thorough, interactive exhibits starting on the 3rd floor, which is devoted to the early days of Vegas and the gambling industry, down through the 2nd floor, which deals with mobsters in the golden age of Vegas (the 50s through the 70s), finally ending up on the ground floor, which covers organized crime of today, as well as the Mafia mystique as glamorized by Hollywood.

To its credit, the Mob Museum doesn’t really glamorize the mob – rather, it presents it in a gritty, sober fashion befitting a real Museum. Even the advertising speaks to this ethos: their ads read “There are Two Sides to Every Story…” and indeed, this museum devotes an equal amount of time and floor space to the history of the FBI and the crime fighters themselves. That’s not to say it’s dull – the exhibits are designed in a very clever, fun way, and it would be easy to spend at least 2-3 hours in here browsing around in here (not to mention the well-stocked gift shop). I enjoyed it thoroughly – my only beef being that it closes at 8pm on weekends. Come on, this is VEGAS! Who has time to do all this before 8pm??

Next I cruised down the Strip to the Mob Attraction, at the Tropicana. I admit, I had low hopes for this place, having assumed from the ads and media hype that it was little more than schlock pandering to tourists. Plus, it’s located in a casino…and I hate parking at casinos, because it takes FOREVER to walk from your car to wherever you’re going. In the case of the Mob Attraction, it’s located all the way in the back of the sprawling Tropicana complex, back by the convention area…and is somewhat tricky to find.

Fortunately, immediately upon entering the Tropicana I ran into a strolling actor dressed as a mobster, who was basically roaming the property trying to lure tourists into the Attraction. This kind gentleman, who introduced himself as “B. Genovese” in a stereotypical goombah accent, kindly led me all the way back through the casino to the Attraction – and my low expectations were totally blown away!

True, the Mob Attraction is less formal about the presentation of its subject matter – but formality is something of a liability in a city like Vegas, where the streets are clogged with flip-flop wearing fanny-packers toting yard-long daiquiris. Most Vegas tourists would rather eat at Hooters than a 5-star restaurant – and along those same lines, I think most tourists would prefer the Mob Attraction to the Mob Museum.

The Mob Attraction has the look and feel of an elaborate Disney ride. You enter through the “port of New York,” stopping at “Ellis Island” to have your photo taken and to be issued “immigration documents.” After these formalities, you enter the actual Attraction, which is a warren of exhibits and theme rooms peopled by live actors doing their best “Fuhgeddaboutit” routines. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s actually done very well, and some of the rooms are very cleverly appointed: after meeting with a notorious “crime boss,” you encounter an angry cop and a crooked casino employee who asks your advice on how best to punish a man caught cheating at cards. You walk through an Italian café, a courtroom, a casino count room and a casino surveillance room, among others. It’s VERY interactive, and very fun.

After the interactive portion of the tour, you enter a more traditional museum-like exhibit space, which showcases artifacts of clothing, jewelry and other items belonging to actual mobsters. But even this area feels more “fun” than the exhibits at the Mob Museum. There are interactive touchscreens in every room, and everything is presented in such an engaging manner that you don’t even realize you’re learning about history. Perhaps most significantly, there is even a bar located in the middle of the museum part, so you can booze it up while browsing the exhibits. Just try that at the Mob Museum!

Other things to consider when deciding between the Attraction and the Museum: the Museum admission is $18 ($10 for Nevada residents), while the Attraction is more expensive, at $25 ($22 for NV residents). The cheaper price of the downtown Museum is probably due to the fact that you’ll have to take a cab to get there…whereas the Tropicana is right on the Strip, near a Monorail stop. But if you’re a compulsive shopper, it should be noted that the Mob Museum gift shop is much better stocked, and with more inventive inventory, than the one at the Mob Attraction.

All in all, after having digested both experiences, I find myself in a mild state of shock: I consider myself part of the liberal elite – I listen to NPR, and prefer reading books to watching TV, and all of that sanctimonious crap. But it pains me to say that even I preferred the low-brow antics of the Mob Attraction to the more traditional approach of the Mob Museum. Maybe I’ve lived in Vegas too long, and my attention span has been warped.

Or maybe, the Mob Attraction is just more fun… plain and simple.

Seeing this show is like blowing the dust off an old favorite photo album, bringing back the thrill of rediscovery. Brian Hoffman brings Red Skelton back to Vegas in a valuable rediscovery of the late great movie, radio, and TV comedian. Even if you never knew Red Skelton you’ll find you have a new friend by the end of the evening.

Recreate a celebrity, imitate their mannerisms and mimic their voice, Brian Hoffman does all of that very well. He’s nailed Red’s smile, the way he swung his arms and hips, and that disarming warning giggle just before he’s about to drop a funny bomb on you. He turns the hat upside down when he switches characters in the midst of the same joke, and flips his red hair forward when introducing you to Gertrud and Heathcliff, but there’s more. Brian Hoffman seems to have captured Red’s heart, and is more than willing to hand it to his audience.

The stage at the Westin Hotel is small and the room intimate. So when a single spot light hits the actor it looks like he’s standing in one of those glossy black and white celebrity performance photos you see in some vintage Vegas casino. When Red speaks you’re drawn into the glossy photo with him, becoming one of those frozen laughing faces, but coming alive with Red for just this show.

Dressed in a plain 3-piece suit and black bow tie Brian tells Red’s jokes sometimes flat and sometimes sharp. He looks expectantly out at his audience after each offering, as Red did, and waits for a response. He’s worked hard introducing the joke, aimed it your funny bone, and finally tossed it into your lap. If you don’t laugh he’s disappointed, of course, and he’ll stare at the audience for just long enough and then deliver a comeback joke to get you going again. It’s the comedian’s game of “fetch” with his audience and Brian Hoffman does it well.

After the opening stand up set he introduces a couple of Red’s pantomime classics like “The Old Man and The Little Boy, ” “Bacon Sizzling in the Pan,” and the iconic drunken “Guzzler’s Gin Program” sketch. Then Red’s characters come out. First is Gertrude and Heathcliff, then Junior The Mean Widdle Kid (I dood it) , and Clem Kaddiddilehopper. After the classic character sketches Brian gets serious and hands you Red’s patriotism in Red’s famous “Pledge of Allegiance” soliloquy. Each is true to character and a welcome friend, but someone’s missing. Has Brian forgotten our favorite homeless tramp?

Brian brings up a dressing table from back stage, turns his back to the audience, sits, and begins to put on the character; the makeup, the hat, coat and scarf. He tells the tale of Freddie the Freeloader, a kind soul who is never homeless because he is always giving to others. In a few moments Brian stands, turns, and we get Freddie, as we have wanted him; kind, funny, philosophical, and embracing. Red’s heart is handed to us again through Freddie.

Here’s where Brian brings his own story to us as well. His MySpace page tells us he was raised on a farm in North Dakota. On stage he tells us he was a truck driver until a back injury forced him into comedy, or was he just setting up another joke? While hosting shows in Ohio so many people commented about his likeness to Red Skelton he decided to develop his own tribute.

Red Skelton was on TV, Tuesday nights mostly, from 1951 to 1971. A top radio and movie star in the 1940s, and a TV icon, along with Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, and the TV shows Gunsmoke and Bonanza in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, he even introduced The Rolling Stones to America. How can he be forgotten?

Though Red foresaw the day people would stock their own libraries with commercial movies and TV shows, his bitterness toward the networks and his total resistance to off color performing or being broadcast near them caused him to insist that all of his TV shows be destroyed after his death. Luckily his last wife and others objected and this last wish was not fulfilled. There were other consequences, however.

“Because Red Skelton never let his TV shows go into syndication a generation has grown up not knowing him,” Brian says. “My performances are dedicated to making sure than Red Skelton and his characters will never be forgotten.”

And we won’t forget our night with you, Brian, as we remember leaving the theater with a warm spot in our hearts and tear in our eye. “And may God bless” to you too for bringing back our Red, Mr. Hoffman.

WARNING: attending a performance of Human Nature can lead to serious hand-clapping, foot-stopping, dancing-in-your-seat and aisles behavior – not to mention, singing along.

At a recent performance, audience members succumbed to all the above as Human Nature served up their unique brand of classic Motown with a subtle, yet distinct modern twist. “There is such beauty in the original material,” says Human Nature member Phil Burton “We didn’t want to make a carbon copy of the songs, but we didn’t want to change them into something they weren’t, either.”

Brothers Andrew and Mike Tierney, along with Phil Burton and Toby Allen began honing their Motown chops 22 years ago while still attending high school in their native Sydney, Australia. A more unlikely combination – classic Motor City Motown and 4 mates from Down Under – is difficult to imagine. But these lads successfully prove that a sincere love and respect for the material overrides all else, as they seamlessly blend their own arrangements and harmonies into the songs for a faithful yet updated result that is just plain fun for all generations, whether they are Motown aficionados or simply fans of great music impeccably presented.

The group’s success includes reaching the status of Australia’s leading pop vocal group, releasing nine albums world-wide, five #1 records in their native continent and millions sold around the world. Other highlights include the group serving as opening act for legends such as Celine Dion and Michael Jackson in Europe and Australia, and the five-times-platinum status of their chart-topping Motown tribute “Reach Out”. That achievement ultimately attracted the attention of famed songwriter Smokey Robinson, who recorded “Get Ready” with the group and presented them exclusively at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas, where they have been in residence for 2 ½ years now. They also continue performing around the world including a recent appearance on Dancing With The Stars.

Their Las Vegas act warms up the audience pre-show with some of their recorded tracks accompanying Human Nature fun facts up on the video screen. Yes, some audience members begin their seat-dancing behavior at this point. Then Human Nature takes the stage, ably backed by their 7-piece band, lead by musical director Ronnie Foster. A relative rarity these days for Las Vegas shows, the live band serves as an integral “5th member” of the group, lending an appropriate texture to the presentation that recorded backing tracks couldn’t deliver.

The show encompasses a full range of depth within the Motown catalog including Marvin Gaye’s classic, “What’s Goin’ On” from the label’s later period, the show-stopping Supremes standard “Stop in the Name of Love” and a poignant rendition of The Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There”. Video interludes round out the presentation and lend further character to the group. When they take the stage for their final set of infectious feel-good classics audience members are already on their feet so “Get Ready” for a good time and go see Human Nature.

For anyone looking for a true musical journey that will provide an evening of non-stop hits, one would be hard pressed to find a better or more satisfying experience than “The Jersey Boys”, a musical send up of the life and times of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. From their humble beginnings in New Jersey, to their meteoric rise to fame, and their eventual split careers, this is an ear-pleasing spectacle that any music lover won’t soon forget.

Having recently opened in the Paris Hotel and Casino, “Jersey Boys” is a fine addition to the Paris’ theater. Part biography and part documentary, the production is a two-hour time machine that starts with the origins of the Four Seasons (including the many and multiple names and music genres the group went through before settling on their distinctive sound), and the discovery and emergence of a teenaged Frankie Castelluccio, who would later become Frankie Valli.

What follows is a journey that starts from those early days of the 1950’s to a near present-day conclusion. The show is narrated through the eyes of each member: Tommy DeVito, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi, and Frankie Valli, as each recount their memories of the group’s struggles, successes, and disagreements. The narration seamlessly covers multiple decades in a short amount of time, and the music of the Four Seasons provides an effective transitional means to keep the story steadily moving along.

The music found in “Jersey Boys” is a jukebox of classic tunes that will find a place for any music fan. For Four Seasons enthusiasts, this covers almost every hit they’ve done. For newcomers, what is surprising about the music is that each of these songs has likely been heard at some point if you’ve ever owned a radio. The amount of influence that the Four Seasons held with popular music becomes readily apparent when collected into a production such as this, and each piece is a pleasant surprise that will keep audience members tapping their feet. So for those who claim to be unfamiliar with the Four Seasons… one may find themselves realizing that they have actually been a fan all along.

The performances themselves are wonderful. Ranging from light-hearted moments to tension and heartache, the actors carry their performances convincingly, but when the four leads perform as the Four Seasons, their accuracy to the original group is uncanny. They stand confidently both in covering the original members’ ranges and in their individual talents. The theater’s design really carries the music well, providing for an intimate in feel concert experience.

“Jersey Boys” is a fantastic trip into music history, and the recent move into the Paris has done nothing to diminish its energetic luster. Spending an evening with these “Boys” will provide a memorable experience regardless of what generation the audience was born in. From the first musical act to the final curtain call, this will be a production that you’ll find yourself singing along to long for days to come.

Country Superstars Show Tickets

Out in the country, they’re always ready to have a good time. The same is true for Las Vegas, so kick on yer leather boots, strap that silver buckle and top that noggin’ with that good ol’ cowboy hat and get ready to sway those hips and kick them heels to the top hits of the today’s hottest country music superstars. This isn’t a fancy karaoke, and certainly not a lip-syncing look-alike contest. These tribute artists rock the stage with an amazing five-piece band singing and performing to you live. They are so talented that you quickly forget you are watching a tribute show.

Country tribute artists that can be seen performing in the show include Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Cody Collins and more. A country duo was the opening act as the audience found their way to their seats before the show. When the show began the band immediately played the popular hit “Turn On The Radio” and soon “Reba” was on stage getting the crowd excited. I was amazed at her performance! She looked and sounded exactly like Reba McEntire and by the time the fourth song began, “Consider Me Gone”, I felt like I was watching Reba herself in concert! The inflections in her voice and her mannerisms on stage were a mirror image.

The next performance that night was “Ronnie Dunn” from the well-known country group Brooks & Dunn. He sang popular hits such as “Play Something Country” and “Put A Girl In It”. He also performed Dunn’s hit single from his solo career, “Bleed Red” amidst a stunning red-lit background and a single white spot light. The crowd was really energized during the performance of “Big & Rich”. Popular hits include, “Comin’ To Your City”, “Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy), and their #1 single in 2007 “Lost In This Moment”. These exciting performers really engaged the crowd with their blend of country, rock and funk musical style. They did not hesitate to get into the crowd to encourage the audience to get up and dance. At one point we were somehow persuaded into doing a slow motion wave!

“Reba”, in her sparkling black jacket, came back on stage accompanied by “Dunn” and together they sang the well-known heartfelt duet “If You See Him, If You See Her”, with a luminous blue light surrounding them coupled with a sky of shimmering violet light. The next song, she called “My song with an attitude.” Also known as “Fancy”, this is one of Reba McEntire’s greatest hits. Before she began singing “Little Rock,” she tells the audience that there’s nothing better than singing a happy song about divorce. And during her performance of the popular hit song, she walked through the audience and gave a man an accusing eye as she sang, “Why Haven’t I Heard From You?”

Of course it cannot be said that these performances would be the same without their accompanying five-piece band, which includes piano, electric & acoustic guitar, Fender steel guitar, electric bass, and drums. We got an introduction of these amazing musicians and short solo performance from each. Without these talented musicians, the show would merely seem like a fancy karaoke. The final performance of the evening was “Cody Collins”, lead singer of the well-known country music group Lonestar. He rocked the stage with a plain black t-shirt, dog tags, and jeans, singing with one of Lonestar’s greatest hit singles, “What About Now?” as well as, “Walking In Memphis”. He also performed songs from his solo career, which included “The One Thing”.

I have to say, even though I’m admittedly not a country music fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire musical performance and highly recommend Country Superstars at the Golden Nugget, not only to the die hard country music lovers, but to anybody looking for a fun night of live concert entertainment.

There are few entertainers that can boast the longevity and widespread appeal of master illusionist David Copperfield. His career has spanned decades with Broadway shows and Emmy winning television specials that have showcased everything from walking through the Great Wall of China to making the Statue of Liberty disappear. And now he brings that talent and wonder to reside in the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, in a 90-minute spectacle that will leave the audience breathless.

The show does not pull any punches in immediately engaging the show-goers from the beginning, treating the crowd to impressive feats that seem almost impossible in nature from a technical standpoint. But there is more to the show than just illusion. A storytelling element is found in several of David’s conjurations, highlighting tales from David’s youth or stories that he has been inspired by. The outcomes to these narrations are both surprising and touching. For long-time fans, there is even a highlight film of one of his more death-defying escapes.

David is very clearly in his element here, making full use of the theater’s space to highlight his work. He is never simply confined to the stage, and can literally appear in the middle of the audience without warning. Whether in the back row, or front and center to the main stage, the experience is filled with excellent viewing opportunities, and Copperfield’s interactions with the audience are good-natured and filled with a playful sense of humor.

And yet, this is not just simply David’s show. There is a large amount of audience participation involved, as Copperfield makes his way through the crowd, involving guests to join in on these feats. The results from both perspectives are entertaining, and there are even a few humorous cameos during the show via a feathery, web-footed assistant.

The one thing that is never fully explained, however, is how he accomplishes these feats. Even seated close to the stage, it feels impossible to truly understand how giant objects materialize out of thin air, objects pass through each other in improbable ways, and things float around on their own. The execution is flawless and remarkable. How are they done? Only David Copperfield knows….

David Copperfield’s show is a remarkable production that will certainly appeal to all ages, whether the audience has children, or find themselves to still be children at heart. Whether a long-time fan, or one who is experiencing David Copperfield’s magic for the first time, this is a show that is best enjoyed with an open mind, and an active imagination.

As soon as you enter the tent in front of Caesars Palace, the peculiar carny atmosphere initiates the sneaking suspicion that “Absinthe” is not your standard fair.

One of the finest characteristics of “Absinthe” is that it is difficult to pin down; it is a true variety show complete with acrobats, dancers, tightrope walkers, and singing. While there is something for everyone, being prudish will most certainly thwart your enjoyment.

Seeing that it is an 18-and-over show, not much is deemed sacred throughout the performance and certainly not a show for those with timid ears. But it works, and works well.

The Gazillionaire, with his trademark ruffle shirt and 70’s suit, and his assistant, Penny Pibbets, have some debauched comedy routines that touch on just about all of our remaining taboos. The parodies seemed to be among the audience favorites, particularly a supposedly sensual dance performed by a couple whose skills are purposely debatable. On the other hand, there is a roller-skating routine that only came to fruition with such dedication and precision that it is genuinely astonishing, at the same time slightly frightening to those sitting in the first row.

The tent looks like it could have housed a vaudeville act of yesteryear, complete with kitschy wall décor and simple folding chairs surrounding the 9-foot circular stage. While the majority of the seating is general admission, the size and arrangement of the tent helps to ensure that everyone has a decent view of the stage.

While it may seem thoughtless not to mention each individual act, it is best to settle into “Absinthe” with little knowledge of the specifics. However, do not let your excitement and anticipation be dampened, because it will undoubtedly make for an entertaining night.

Deep within the Luxor Casino, eager visitors looking to add a little bit of spice in their evening will not have to travel much farther than the little showroom theater that houses one of the Strip’s sexiest shows: Fantasy.

But make no mistake: Within that smaller-sized theater is allowed a level of personal intimacy to the events happening on the stage, all of which is complimented by the eye-pleasing ensemble cast that makes up this production. “Fantasy” is here to entertain, in a very attractive, and often very witty package. And alongside all of those genuinely beautiful women that dance to a variety of sexy musical numbers and styles, is the evening’s very attractive and talented Lorena Peril.

Peril is no mere pretty face or simple hostess. While she wears a number of attention-getting outfits throughout the show, her true talent lies in her powerful singing voice. Singing a number of covers, as well as her own material, she can belt out a series of musical numbers that few can compare to. Her excellent voice is complimented by her playful attitude, which engages the audience, and allows them to have a level of participation in the show.

While this is a show that focuses on singing and gorgeous ladies, there is a chance to take a breather and cool down with the comedy talents of Sean E. Cooper. Sean’s act is a whole other level of the show’s entertainment. Doing a wide variety of impersonations from James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr., and a spot-on moveset of Michael Jackson, Sean has great fun interacting with the audience, delivering rapid-fire joke after joke, and keeping the crowd laughing. The humor sticks to the style of the show: A little risqué, but never tasteless. Cooper even (literally) gets into the act by providing the rap for one of Lorena Peril’s musical numbers.

There is still more enjoyment to be had at the end of the show as the Fantasy girls welcome the chance for talking to the performers, autographs, and photo opportunities as guests leave the venue. Fans wanting one final souvenir from the event will certainly get their chance for a lasting impression.

For a unique experience unlike anywhere else, “Fantasy” is a fantastical mix of beautiful women, powerful singing and pleasing dance moves, and an opportunity to laugh thanks to some great comedy. While it’s a fun show for a night out on the town “with the guys”, it’s welcoming and diverse enough to make for an out of the ordinary adventure for couples as well. One thing is for certain, however: It’s an experience that one will be hard pressed to find outside of the excitement and glamor of Las Vegas.

“O”ver the top Las Vegas Entertainment

Included on many people’s “If you only see one show in Vegas see this one” list, “O” delivers as a classic Cirque production where theater, circus and surrealism combine on a lavish scale with breath-taking results. The title “O” derives from the French word “eau” (pronounced “oh”), meaning “water”, the show’s central theme — from tiny droplets to torrential downpours.

A 1.5 million gallon pool forms the centerpiece of this production, entertaining audiences in and of itself through an amazing series of technological transformations: from deep pool to shallow water to dry stage and back to pool again, playing host to one incredible act after another. A parade of esoteric characters cavort across the shifting landscape created by this one-of-a-kind stage construction. Try not to blink or you may miss some of the varied and subtle elements inserted throughout. And don’t overlook the upper, enclosed balcony areas to each side of the stage, which contain the live musicians and singers performing a suitably Cirquish (Cirque Du Soleil’s own “language” of French-Italian sounding lyrics) musical score.

An opening synchronized swimming act gives way to a solo trapeze performance followed by amphibiously costumed acrobats executing their already-precarious maneuvers on a tiny “island” in the middle of the pool. Other acts that leave spectators gasping are the high-flyers performing from aboard a giant ship moving pendulum-like above the stage, and the “swinging” divers, who return later to hurl themselves off 60 ft perches far above the pool, inspiring well-deserved gasps from the audience.

The production cleverly also includes an antithetical balance to all the aquatics by offering up a well-placed set featuring water’s polar opposite – fire. Audience members sit transfixed by the death-defying skill of Hawaiian fire dancers building a crescendo to the unbelievable sight of a “burning” man. An eventual segue back to the show’s water-centric form proves the only way to cool down from this intense performance.

As the family of 6 a couple of rows forward proved, “O” deserves the Cirque reputation for mass appeal entertainment. Not only does the non-verbal format of the production eliminate any language barriers for enjoyment, but the 4 children ranging from age 6 to 16 all appeared equally poised on the edge of their seats, along with Mom and Dad. Not surprisingly, the night’s performance ended with a standing “O”vation!

Performances nightly 7:30 & 10p, dark Mon & Tues — be seated 30 minutes prior to showtime to catch the watery clown play inside the “O” theater
