Splash at Riviera

As if Las Vegas needed another reason to party down, it found one: The recent Las Vegas Centennial Celebration! And there is no better show to represent Vegas throughout the Century than the ultimate in variety entertainment, The Riviera's "Splash." Splash is no new trend on the block. The show has been around since the beginning of sin, re-vamping and renewing itself with enough true talent to survive Vegas in all it's different phases. From the classic sexy showgirl acts to synchronized swimming to comedy to ice skating to motorcycle maniacs, Splash, throughout the times, has truly earned the title of "the longest running show on The Strip."

Since 1985, Splash has blown the top off the showroom with specialty acts that are out of this world. Currently the show is still rockin' with outrageous talent, but the new Splash extravaganza has a historical twist featuring acts inspired by the last 100 years in Vegas entertainment. Tributes include Elvis, Ann Margaret, The Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, and even reach so far as Usher and The Outkast to name only a few. These are all placed snug between the dynamic and original acts that have made Splash legendary.

splash-las-vegas-shows-03.gif (13500 bytes)For instance, Los Latin Cowboys, undoubtedly get the crowd going with the drumming of bombos, swinging bolos, and traditional Argentinean dance all rolled together with comedy and audience participation. The Richard Brothers offer up another package of awe with an outrageous juggling act that is far from the conventional tossing of clubs. All of them are highly skilled performers who bring intensity to the stage along with unrivaled hilarity slipped cleverly between flying objects.

splash-las-vegas-shows-01.gif (6951 bytes)Another major show feature is held on a 35 x 15ft ice rink and makes Nancy Kerrigan look like a wind up toy. International skaters Mikhail Panin and Nadia sharp demonstrate not only sheer beauty and grace on ice, but their unbelievable choreography and partnered stunts seem nothing other than downright death defying. Irina Grigorian, USA Professional Ice Skating Gold Medalist, also transforms the ice. Her jaw-dropping hula-hoop routine brings such a creative (and unmatched) new flavor to ice skating.

One of the most redeeming traits about Splash as a show is the fact that it's always experimenting with and rotating new acts in and out, but it definitely keeps those which make a mark. One new act for example is Vitaly. Vitaly performs an aerial acrobatic silk act in which his sultry demonstration of strength and coordination are upstaged only by his incredible muscles.

splash-las-vegas-shows-04.gif (10791 bytes)The act to keep without question? None other than the motorcycle mad men in the Thunderdome. Racing about in every direction in a steel sphere cage, this act is not for the weak of heart. It also wasn't created over night. With the help of a lot of training and a lot of experience, the act has gone from only consisting of 2 maniacs, to now 4 insane motorcycle riders who risk their lives every performance.

Positively no form of entertainment adventure has been left out of Splash. The quality production has lived through all the major resort casino trends. Sex appeal, comedy, daredevils, culture, beauty, and innovative new talent are the foundation for a show that can't help but survive. The Riviera's "Splash" can look forward to being the entertainment heavyweight for many Centennial Celebrations to come.

From the showgirls, dancers, and singers to that modem tribute artists, hilarious comedy jugglers, world-class ice skaters, international specialty acts and motorcycle daredevils, this is one you should put on your "must see" list.
